About the Event
Blending film, chamber music and storytelling, this event focuses on the story of Jews who found refuge in China during WW2.
This captivating event brings together a unique blend of film, chamber music, and storytelling to illuminate the extraordinary legacy of Jewish musicians who found refuge in China during World War II. At its heart is the North American premiere of the acclaimed documentary Visit from China—an official selection of the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival—which chronicles the remarkable story of Ferdinand Adler, a Hungarian-Jewish violinist and former concertmaster of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and his pupil Mingliang Sheng. Their bond, forged amidst the backdrop of wartime Shanghai, stands as a testament to resilience, shared heritage and cultural exchange.
The evening will feature a special performance by the Shalom-Mei Ensemble, led by renowned Israeli-Canadian violinist Daniel Temnik. The concert will bring to life compositions by Antonio Vivaldi, George Frideric Handel, and AntonÃn Dvořák, highlighting the unique historical intersection of Jewish and Chinese cultural influences. Adding a dimension of depth to the experience, Fang Sheng, son of Mingliang Sheng, shares intimate reflections on his father's journey and the enduring impact of this extraordinary connection.
This event seamlessly intertwines film, live music, and personal narrative, offering a celebration of creativity, survival, and the unifying power of art across generations.
