Yes, the body releases hormones when babies sleep. One of the hormones that is released is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness. It is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and is released in response to darkness. Melatonin levels in newborns are low and increase as they grow older.


Another hormone that is released during sleep is growth hormone. Growth hormone is released by the pituitary gland in the brain and is responsible for growth and development. The largest amount of growth hormone is released during the first phase of night sleep.
