About the Event
Join us for a day of dialogue, creativity, and connection at the Learning with the Land Symposium on Saturday, June 14, in Scarfe Room 100
🌿Learning with the Land Symposium
How can art education help us learn with the land in a time of climate crisis and ongoing efforts toward decolonization?
On Saturday, June 14, join international artists and educators for the Learning with the Land Symposium . This public gathering invites us to come together and listen to art educators on ways to share knowledge and explore creative practices that honour place, relationality, and responsibility.
Through panel discussions and hands-on making, we'll reflect on how art education can support more reciprocal and rooted relationships with the land, one another, and the futures we're trying to build.
Come think along a network of international art educators weaving together land-based learning, climate justice, and decolonial approaches to teaching through art.

🌎About the Learning with the Land Project
The Learning with the Land project is a multi-year, SSHRC-funded international research partnership bringing together art educators, scholars, and communities committed to learning with the land, decolonial pedagogies, and environmental responsibility.
Led by Dr. Shannon Leddy (UBC) and Dr. Rita L. Irwin (UBC), and a network of co-investigators and researchers across Canada, the US, Norway, and Australia, the project explores how art education can support reciprocal relationships with the land and amplify Indigenous and local knowledges in times of climate and ecological crises.
Through walking practices, arts-based research, and international knowledge sharing, the project invites participants to question dominant paradigms in education and co-create grounded, ethical, and imaginative responses to the climate emergency and colonial systems that shape our schools.
This symposium represents a culminating gathering for many of the researchers involved, offering space to share findings, creative work, and practices of learning with the land in diverse contexts.
