Synopsis:
Set in a remote Aymara community in the Peruvian Andes, Yana-Wara tells the tragic story of a 13-year-old girl who, after enduring sexual violence, begins to experience terrifying visions believed to be caused by evil spirits inhabiting forbidden places. Her grandfather, Don Evaristo, stands trial under the communal justice system, accused of her murder.
Directed by Óscar Catacora and completed posthumously by his uncle Tito Catacora, Yana-Wara is performed entirely in the Aymara language by non-professional actors from the region. Its striking black-and-white cinematography and powerful storytelling make it one of the most important Indigenous films of recent years.
Join us for a compelling evening that showcases the richness of Peruvian cinema and the profound narratives emerging from its indigenous communities.
