About the Event

Music for rocks and electronics, spontaneous songs, and trumpet soundscapes from some of the city's best improvisors

Gayle Young and James Harley's “Lithophonica”

Stones, the instruments featured on this album, are joined by sounds of bells, sticks and Young's stringed instruments as Harley expands their resonance, shaping sounds through granulation, layering, trans-position, delays, and spatialisation. Bells resonate with stones, stones rock on strings, and resonant sticks bounce on strings.

Young's collection of resonant stones from the shores of Newfoundland, resonant sticks from abandoned beaver lodges in Ontario, played with bells and assorted hardware, are combined with stringed instruments she designed and built.

As hex-bolts are rolled over stones resting on strings, their vibrations cause the strings to sound. Signal processing simultaneously expands the depth and frequency range, adding complexity through layering and subtle shifts over time.

When Young walks along a beach she watches for flat stones, usually rounded by waves.

She tests each stone for tone, tapping it with another stone while holding it at its nodes to let it vibrate. Stones can play each other and can be set on strings so that both the strings and the stones are heard.

Matt Brubeck and Caylie Staples

Cellist Matt Brubeck and singer Caylie Staples perform completely improvised songs. As the duo creates the music, Caylie makes up all of the words live on stage. Over the years they have developed a remarkable improvisational compatibility in this unique form of spontaneous song creation. Eschewing pre-existing lyrics, melodies, or traditional song forms, their music is a celebration of serendipity, whimsy, and the creative potency of any given moment. Each performance is like a musical trust exercise; going with what the other is giving and committing to keep the balloon up! Their first album of improvised songs, “The Lily”, was released in 2021 to positive reviews.

“The concept is simple - the two artists simply begin improvising on the spot, conjuring up compositions out of thin air. Naturally, the songs take as long to listen to as they took to create. Improvisation can be a less challenging proposition without the element of vocals that require immediately composed lyrics, and while some of the lyrics here have a freewheeling surrealism that results from quick thinking, those words mesh beautifully with the music.”

Chris Ingalls, Tome to The Weather Machine

“Both have impeccable instincts and exercise insight and restraint here as they uncover these vignettes.”

Nick Storring, Riperian Acoustics Newsletter.

Korba Sun Collective

The Korba Sun Collective is a boundary-pushing music experience that explores the raw edges of sound through jazz improvisation. Featuring Georgia Korba on double bass, Yuzi Sun on drums, Matt Aasen on guitar and Dylan Pilcher on trumpet, the group thrives on spontaneous creation and sonic exploration. Together, they forge immersive soundscapes where rhythm meets chaos, and melody dissolves into pure texture. Each is a journey into the unknown, shaped by the moment and the energy of the room.
