Updated: 5 hours ago

The planned hovercraft link between Toronto and the Niagara region is set to transform transportation and tourism in Ontario. This innovative service, known as Hoverlink, aims to transport passengers across Lake Ontario in just 30 minutes, significantly reducing travel time compared to traditional methods.

Hovercraft Link Between Toronto and Niagara Region

Overview of the Service

The hovercraft will operate between Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto and a new facility at Port Weller in St. Catharines. These amphibious vehicles can travel over land, water, and ice, allowing for versatile operation in various weather conditions. The hovercraft will float approximately 1.8 meters above the surface, propelled by powerful fans and propellers that create an air cushion beneath the hull.

Key Features

  • Travel Time: The total journey is estimated to take only 30 minutes, making it a quick alternative to driving or taking public transit.

  • Capacity: Each hovercraft can accommodate up to 180 passengers, plus crew, making it suitable for both tourists and commuters.

  • Frequency: The service is expected to operate 48 times daily, year-round, providing ample opportunities for travel.

  • Environmental Impact: By potentially removing 8,000 cars from the QEW each day, the hovercraft service aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions in the region.

Economic and Tourism Benefits

Hoverlink is not just a transportation project; it is also seen as a catalyst for economic development and tourism. The service is expected to enhance access to popular destinations such as Niagara-on-the-Lake and the wineries in the Niagara region. Chris Morgan, the CEO of Hoverlink, emphasized that this initiative could unlock new possibilities for regional tourism, employment, and housing.

Shuttle Services and Partnerships

Upon arrival at the St. Catharines terminal, passengers will have access to shuttle buses that will take them to key locations, including the Fallsview Hilton, downtown Niagara-on-the-Lake, Fort George, and Niagara College. The company plans to collaborate with local businesses to create package deals that encourage tourism and support the local economy.
