About the Event

A lecture and book launch focused on highlighting the religious, political, and social history of Ukraine through an ecclesial lens.

Please join the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, located at the University of St. Michael's College, for a lecture on the life of Andrey Sheptytsky. The lecture, "Who is Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky? is the Wrong Question," given by Dr. Daniel Fedorowycz, will explore and clarify the political and social thought of Metropolitan Andrey through his many encyclicals. In conjunction with this lecture, a new book will be publicly launched in honour of the successor to Metropolitan Andrey, Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The book, War Peace and Truth: His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk and Professor Timothy Snyder in Conversation, is a print form of Archbishop Shevchuk's lecture and dialogue with Timothy Snyder that took place at the University of Toronto in February 2025.

Dr. Daniel Fedorowycz is Research Associate, Public History Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He manages the lab's partnership with the Ukrainian History Global Initiative, a collaboration of more than 90 researchers that is establishing a scholarly and accessible presentation of the deep history of the lands of contemporary Ukraine and the peoples who have inhabited them. Dr. Fedorowycz received his DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford, and has held fellowships at Harvard, Yale, the University of Toronto, and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. His research focuses on 20th century European state-building, state repression, and interethnic violence. His work has appeared in Comparative Politics, Democratization, East European Politics and Societies, Nationalities Papers, and East European Jewish Affairs.

Copies of War Peace and Truth: His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk and Professor Timothy Snyder in Conversation will be available onsite. The evening will begin with a reception from 6:30-7:00p.m. The event will conclude with Small Compline in the Sheptytsky Institute's onsite chapel, St. Sophia.
