A Sensory-Accessible Concerts performance featuring soprano Maureen Batt with pianist Jennifer King and bassist Richard Belding.
Our December Sensory-Accessible Concerts program wraps up the year with a bow of sparkle and warmth, featuring soprano Maureen Batt, double bassist Richard Belding, and series host and pianist Jennifer King. Blending classical richness, theatrical flair, and a touch of holiday magic, this program offers humour, holly, and heart in an inviting, sensory-friendly atmosphere. Giacomo Puccini's “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi brings gentle operatic drama and soaring lyricism, while “Someone Is Sending Me Flowers,”a charming contemporary art song exploring themes of romance and wit, offers an intimate, story-like calm. The timeless joy of Lerner and Loewe's “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady lifts spirits with its lilting energy, and Rodgers and Hammerstein's “You'll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel carries quiet reassurance through its steady, comforting rhythm. Jason Robert Brown's “Christmas Lullaby” from Songs for a New World offers reflective stillness, while Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg's classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz and Arlen and Johnny Mercer's “Come Rain or Come Shine” from St. Louis Woman bring familiar warmth and graceful flow. A lighthearted holiday medley adds a bit of sparkle and invites gentle participation through a relaxed sing-along for those who wish to join.
Praised for her “rich, warm sound and masterful acting” (Opera Canada), Maureen Batt brings both opera and storytelling charm to the stage. Together with Richard Belding and Jennifer King, she creates a space of dazzle, comfort, and connection that is perfect for the season. Co-presented with the Halifax Central Library, this free concert offers a safe and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy live music in a relaxed setting.
